The Waste Land: A Preview

On a sunny afternoon I sat down with Laura Antone, producer of The Waste Land, in order to find out a little bit more about Mermaids’ first “performance” of the year. Antone was adamant that it was indeed a performance of T.S. Eliot’s famous poem, rather than a theatrical production. This widely known twentieth century poem (it even makes an appearance on the reading list for first year English students) centres around the “the search for meaning…in a world which constantly resists.” Through snapshots of voices, the performance explores the idea of destruction and the disintegration of society.

With an experienced crew behind the scenes and a cast made up of six performers spanning all years of study, this is a show you will not want to miss. As our conversation came to a close, Antone teased that there will be an “unexpected surprise” at some point in the show. If you are as intrigued as I am by this ominous suggestion—then head to The Barron Theatre on the 2nd or 3rd of October. Tickets will be available the day of the show at The Barron box office for reservation, or purchase.
