On Thursday 7th April from 6-9pm, head to the Barron Theatre to check out “The Phrase.” This dance show presents several original dance pieces that cover a variety of styles, to create the idea that small phrases and ideas come together to make a complete whole.  The event was inspired by 2014’s ‘Impulse’ and ‘(un)Conscious’ and 2015’s ‘Surface Tension.’ The producer, Audrey Covert, says that “These shows provide us with the opportunity to choreograph for a different way than we usually do. In the end, each of us gets to explore a theme to figure out what it means to us, then translate that to movement.”

This is the third year of this show joining the Festival, and Covert says the team is wonderful. She says, Its fun, because we’re really a bunch of smaller teams, each producing their own piece or pieces of choreography, but the whole thing also comes together to make one big performance. Everyone is excited and dedicated to making the show work!”

When asked “What are you most excited about presenting to your prospective audiences?” Covert replies, “Dance! We’re one of only a couple dance shows in St Andrews each year and that provides a difference audience experience than most performances. Additionally, the size of the Barron means that it’s a very intimate performance in many ways – you’re right up close to the dancers, and don’t miss anything!” The Barron’s small size forces the choreographers to think outside of the box and come up with unique movements and use of space.

Most performers have been dancing since they were three or four. They’re involved in various styles of dance and most love teaching and taking classes through DanceSoc. Courtney from Blue Angels says that dance is in her blood.  Many of the dancers involved have been in the past year’s shows. They find this a unique and interesting way to get involved with dance and perform.

Covert hopes that those attending will walk “away with a stronger appreciation for the ability of dance and movement to convey ideas and emotion.”

To sum the show up in three words, it is: visceral, collaborative, communicative. It’s sure to be a night you won’t want to miss, so be sure to get your tickets now!
