STAR Chats with comedian Craig Hill! Transcript Found Below
STAR: For the people who are not familiar with your shows, how would you describe your comedy?
Craig Hill: I don't think that there are any people who are not familiar with what I do, but I'll explain it anyways. It's very energetic, very camp, tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic and lively. It's very unpredictable. The shows are always one-off performances based on the audience.
STAR: Without giving too much away, what can audiences expect from your gig at the Byre?
CH: My opening number is me singing and dancing dangerously high with my kilt to Madonna. It's very provocative. The show is a lot about real stories and my travels.
STAR: Where have you travelled?
CH: Montreal, Germany and Munich, Singapore and obviously Scotland. I'm British but I've travelled outside the UK quite a lot.
STAR: You have performed at the London Palladium and had sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe - what is it like coming to a rather intimate venue like the Byre theatre in St Andrews?
CH: It's gorgeous. At the Fringe I perform mostly in small theatres and it's very much about your show. The audience invests more in the evening. It's different from a comedy club where evey performer only gets 20 minutes. The Byre is about the same size as the festival theatres and I'm very comfortable doing small theatres. You get more back from the audience when you're in a theatre like that.
STAR: Is there anything you're looking forward to in particular?
CH: Open-minded characters who reveal far too much about themselves. There are people who just walk into a joke and then realize that they've given far too much away.
STAR: You've already told us where you get some of you inspiration from, but how long does it take you to put together a show?
CH: Around three months. It develops gradually throughout the year. I've also started taking a dictaphone with me and record things that I find funny, but on the whole it takes about three months to put a show together.
STAR: If you could sum up your show in one word, what would it be?
CH: Effervescent. Just add water.
If you missed Craig Hill's show at the Byre his tour continues with various shows in Scotland and England. Check out www.mrcraighill.com for more information.
