Possible Changes to Academic Year in the Future

St Andrews students have called for radical changes to the academic year, but opinions are divided on how to proceed. Almost 900 students responded to the Students’ Association semester reform survey, with key issues being financial and environmental impacts of the correct semester structure.

According to Georgina Rannard, director of representation, “three vague options” had emerged.
They include holding exams before Christmas, having a longer Christmas break instead of an inter-semester one with exams at the end, or having all exams in May. The university must now decide on whether any of these options can be put forward for debate among the wider student community.
