The Museum of the History of the Olympic Games in Antiquity, in Ancient Olympia, Greece, was raided by armed robbers on Friday 17 February.
As a consequence of severe economic cutbacks in Greece, a drastic number of guards have been laid off within the last two years. This robbery comes as the second major museum theft within the past two months in Greece.
During the heist two masked men overpowered a guard, and tied up a female employee at the museum.
It is estimated that about 60 artifacts were stolen. However, it still remains uncertain exactly how many items were taken due to the destructive nature of the robbery. All the artifacts are irreplaceable.
