After a drawn-out hearing by CAS (the Court of Arbitration for Sport), former Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has been found guilty of doping, and given a two-year ban.

The ban, backdated to his positive test during the Tour de France in July 2010, means the Spaniard has been stripped off his victories between that date and the present - including the 2010 Tour (with that year's runner-up Andy Schleck set to be named champion instead) and also the 2011 Giro d'Italia.

Contador, who has argued that the drug clenbuterol (a fat-burning and muscle-building supplement) found in his positive test came from contaminated beef, will also miss this year's Tour de France, won last year by Australian Cadel Evans.

Meanwhile British cyclist and 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Mark Cavendish has won his first race as part of Team Sky, at Stage Three of the Tour of Qatar.

He outsprinted overall race leader Tom Boonen to claim victory and move up to third in the overall rankings, despite admitting to not feeling 100% fit due to illness.
