Manx Missile wins Sports Personality

Cyclist Mark Cavendish was voted 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, after a phenomenally successful year for the sprinter from the Isle of Man. As well as winning five stages on his way to clinching the green jersey at this year's Tour de France, Cavendish also won the Road World Championship race for as part of the Great Britain team in Copenhagen.

Second place went to golfer Darren Clarke, who won the Open Championship this year, while gold medal-winning long-distance runner Mo Farah was third.

Sir Steve Redgrave won the Lifetime award, the England Cricket team picked up Team of the Year (and their coach Andy Flower Coach of the Year), tennis star Novak Djokovic took the Overseas award, while the Young Sports Personality award went to golfer Lauren Taylor.

The Helen Rollason trophy for overcoming adversity was awarded to Bob Champion, and Glasgow athletics coaches Janice Eaglesham and Ian Mirfin took the Sports Unsung Hero award.
