Council cuts cause clamour

Fife Council is considering a series of cuts in order to make savings of approximately £90 million by 2015. The council has confirmed it will review both car parking charges and subsidised bus routes, including free school bus travel for Fife schoolchildren.

Tony Martin, chairman of the council’s enterprise, environment and transport committee, admitted that many of the decisions made would be unpopular, but changes were necessary.

Critics have warned that the proposals would most affect vulnerable groups like the elderly, and that raising parking charges could seriously damage the already weak local economy.
