Donald dominant: sports round-up
Sunday saw Luke Donald confirm his place in history as the first golfer to top both the European Tour and US PGA rankings at the end of a season, a third place finish at the Dubai World Championships enough to see off the challenge of Rory McIlroy. McIlroy had to win the event to pip Donald, but eventually finished way off the pace, as the tournament was won by Spaniard Alvaros Quiros.
As English rugby brought in the new with the appointment of interim head coach Stuart Lancaster this week, it also saw out the old as fly-half Jonny Wilkinson retired from the international game. Wilkinson, most famous for his last-gasp drop goal that won England the 2003 Rugby World Cup, began playing for his country in 1998 and a career illuminated by brilliance and blighted by injury came to an end as England lost to France in the World Cup quarter-finals.
In football, Chelsea gave Manchester City's Premiership pursuers hope by inflicting the league leaders' first domestic defeat of the season. Despite Mario Balotelli's early opener, Chelsea equalised through Raul Meireles and - with City's Gael Clichy sent off - won the match through substitute Frank Lampard's penalty.
One of those pursuers, Manchester United, have suffered another player setback: with Nemanja Vidic already ruled out for the season with injury, Darren Fletcher - also Scotland captain - has taken an 'extended break' for health reasons. A serious stomach illness has forced Fletcher to take his leave from club and country duty in the hope that he make a recovery in the long term.
