About Us

STAR first launched in February 2005 (as Star FM).

We first broadcasted under the terms of Ofcom's Restricted Service Licenses, but now broadcast 24/7 over the internet. We bring a mix of information, communication and above all, entertainment to St Andrews and indeed the world. We have the full backing of the University of St Andrews Students' Association and indeed the University itself, and owe a lot to our previous rector, Sir Clement Freud, who was instrumental in getting STAR 'off the ground'.

Much respect goes to Steve Pidcock and Sandy Walker: Two students who, in their final year at University, decided that St Andrews really needed a radio station. It took incredible dedication and vision to break through the barriers of countless failed attempts in the past decades. A star was born (pun intended) and the Pidcock/Walker legacy lives on...

The team behind STAR consists of around 250 students and a committee of 14, who oversee all of the areas involved in broadcasting. We pride ourselves on the high standard of our presenting team, who exhibit impressive depth and variety, making our schedule really problematic to formulate!

Although broadcasting for those in the St Andrews area, we have a massive online listening community, with around 21% of our listeners residing in the USA. We are once again looking forward to interacting with our listenership, through our 'buzz the studio' function and studio webcam!

In the past we have broadcast interviews with Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, Sir Clement Freud, Skin (of Skunk Anansie fame), King Creosote, Sir Menzies Campbell, Simon Pepper, Futureheads, Nylon and The Go! Team. We're pretty sure we have the most impressive guest roster of any student radio station, with: Franz Ferdinand, Sugababes, Bloc Party, The Zutons, Chris Moyles, Edith Bowman, The Kooks, Snow Patrol, KT Tunstall, Dame Judi Dench and oh so many more... Things just got a whole lot bigger!

STAR is an exciting project which relies upon the enthusiasm and dedication of St Andrews students and the financial support of the Students' Association and local businesses. This website should give you all of the information you need to know about STAR, and most importantly, allows you to engage with our broadcast, through listening and contacting us.
